Introducing Eli

私のモチベーションになっているのは、大きなインパクトをもたらす仕事をしたいという気持ちです。それに合成生物学は、これから発展していく余地がたくさんある分野でとても楽しいです。この分野には、創造性にあふれていますし、他の分野のアイデアを取り入れる余地がたくさんあります。たとえば、私がコンピューター工学で学んだことが、合成生物学にも大いに応用できます。または、アナロジー的に考えることもできて、生物学では、遺伝子回路や遺伝子とタンパク質間の相互作用があり、コンピューター工学では、特定のデジタル関数を生成するように設計された電気回路があるんです。このように、この両者の学問には似ているところがありますが、同時に多くの違いもあります。生物学はけっこう厄介なところが多くて、生物学者の仕事のやり方はエンジニアのそれとは大きく異なります。しかし、結局のところ、私たちは新しいものを創造しているので、その違いも含め把握する必要があります。厳しい制約のもとで作業している場合は特にです。そうですね、ですから、この分野には大いに成長と創造性の余地があります。また、私のモチベーションはインパクトをもたらす仕事をしたいだけではないと思います。ほとんどの人がそうであるように、私は自己実現や自己認識がしたいです。そして、私は自分自身がこれならできると思う仕事をしたいと思っています。
What’s my motivation? I think I want to do work that has a high impact. And synthetic biology is exciting because there is so much that can be done in it. There is a lot of room for creativity and bringing ideas from other fields into it: things I learnt from computer engineering can be applied in synthetic biology, for example. Or you can think of it by analogy: in biology, you have genetic circuits, or interactions between genes and proteins, and in computer engineering, you have electric circuits that are designed to produce a certain digital function. So there are some similarities between these things, but there are also a lot of differences. Biology is really messy, and the way biologists do their work is very different from engineers. But, at the end of the day, we’re making new things, so we just have to figure it out–especially when we’re working under tight constraints. So, yeah, there is room to grow and to be creative. But I guess I don’t just want to do impactful work. Like most people, I want to self-actualize or self-realize. And so I want to do work that I think I’m capable of doing.
