About KEN
DJ Kenmstr started as a mobile DJ locally in Yokosuka, the Philippines, and Singapore from 2014 to 2016. He later expanded to Tokyo from 2016 to 2017, before relocating to Bahrain, where he performed in some of the most popular clubs around the country. Bahrain is also where he first was introduced to Afrobeats. Returning to Japan in 2019, he was inspired to create Afrojapan, which has a goal to bring a slice of the Motherland to Japan.
About MATT
Matt is the founder of Kaala, a collective operating in Japan’s extreme music underground that officially began in 2015. Together, they’ve booked countless shows, worked with Japanese, Czech, and US festivals, amassed a trove of data on bands, venues, labels, and events active in the scene, and even released a few albums. Matt himself has a long history as a musician in Japan’s extreme music ecosystem, playing with Darkcorpse, Retch, and now Worship Pain, and has been curating concerts in the Greater Tokyo Area since 2011. His main interest is navigating the “visceral experiences” that occur within the ever-evolving live music space, and is currently exploring novel approaches to scene development via vacant properties in the Japanese countryside.
